What Is Blue Carbon?
Blue carbon is the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems. The principal blue carbon ecosystems are mangrove forests, tidal salt marshes and seagrass meadows.
These ecosystems remove carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. A significant share of that carbon is transferred into waterlogged soils and marine sediment, where low-oxygen conditions can slow decomposition and retain organic carbon for long periods.
Why blue carbon ecosystems matter
Blue carbon ecosystems occupy relatively limited coastal areas, but they can accumulate substantial carbon reserves in their biomass and underlying soils. When these habitats are drained, cleared or degraded, stored carbon can be released while future sequestration capacity is lost.
Their value extends beyond carbon. Mangroves, marshes and seagrass can reduce coastal erosion, weaken wave energy, support fisheries, improve water quality and provide habitat for marine species. These combined benefits make blue carbon relevant to climate mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity strategies.
How blue carbon projects generate credits
A blue carbon project may protect an ecosystem threatened by conversion or restore an area that has already been degraded. Examples include replanting mangroves, restoring tidal flow to salt marshes and improving conditions for seagrass recovery.
To issue carbon credits, the project must apply an eligible methodology and establish a credible baseline. It must also demonstrate additionality, quantify emissions reductions or removals, control leakage and account for reversal risk.
Monitoring may combine field sampling, sediment analysis, biomass measurements, hydrological data, satellite imagery and geographic information systems. Results are independently validated and verified before eligible units can be issued by the applicable carbon standard.
Financing blue carbon projects
Blue carbon projects often require capital before carbon credits are available for sale. Early expenditure can include feasibility work, carbon-rights assessments, community agreements, ecological surveys, restoration activities, project documentation and monitoring infrastructure.
Financing structures may include grants, concessional capital, project equity, forward carbon purchases, offtake agreements and pre-issuance carbon finance. The appropriate structure depends on project maturity, development risk, expected credit issuance and the rights allocated among landowners, communities, governments and project sponsors.
The investment case
A credible blue carbon project combines measurable climate outcomes with coastal resilience and ecosystem restoration. However, not every coastal conservation initiative can support a bankable carbon transaction.
Investors and buyers need clear carbon rights, conservative sequestration estimates, an accepted methodology, durable local participation and a realistic monitoring plan. Strong projects treat carbon revenue as part of a wider ecological and commercial structure rather than as a substitute for technical development.
